At Proto-Cast, LLC, some of our most long-standing clients are in the aerospace industry. From turbine blades and housings to panels and chassis components, we can accommodate the low volume injection moldingnecessitated by these highly customized parts.
Sometimes referred to as “bridge manufacturing,” low volume injection molding covers quantities from 50 to 100,000. When used to create aerospace parts, low volume injection molding offers significant cost savings, as well as additional benefits.
How Does Low-Volume Injection Molding Save You Money?
The savings begin with mold creation. Rather than making the injection tool out of costly steel, it can be made out of cost-effective aluminum instead. Since aluminum is softer than steel, it can crafted into a mold faster and for less cost, cutting your lead time considerably. This means parts can be made and delivered faster. Since it is softer than steel, aluminum molds don’t last as long, but they can easily handle volumes between 50-100,000.
You also benefit from lower minimum orders. If you don’t need a million parts now (or ever), why pay to manufacture and then store the superfluous parts? While larger orders sometimes lower the cost per unit, it doesn’t necessarily mean a lower overall cost. You can still get a quality product that fits your budget.
How Low Volume Injection Molding Benefits the Aerospace Industry
The highly specialized parts used in aerospace design require specific accommodations that only low volume injection molding offer, including:
- Design flexibility
- Fine features and complex geometry
- Tight tolerances
Problem Solving with Proto-Cast, LLC
One of our aerospace customers had a line of 16 different parts with the same geometry, but specs that required different secondary operations. We designed interchangeable cores for the mold so that we could mold all the different requirements for the part, eliminating the costly secondary operations. This made the parts much more economically feasible to manufacture.
